She was born in Delhi to Sheila and Bhupendra Singh Birla. She was the youngest of four daughters. and did her Masters in Mass Communication. Her family was into social causes for four generations, from her great-grandfather and then grandfather who joined the struggle for India's independence.
She worked as a television reporter with a private news channel before entering politics. Apart from that she works in collaboration with few social institutes and works for the causes of Valmiki community, which she belongs to.
She defeated , by over 10,585 votes, millionaire politician and the PWD minister in the Sheila Dikshit government, Raj Kumar Chauhan who had won four consecutive elections since 1993 for the Indian National Congress
